Installation and Setup

To install Portainer, I followed a straightforward process:

Create Portainer Data Volume:

sudo docker volume create portainer_data

Run Portainer Container:

sudo docker run -d -p 8000:8000 -p 9443:9443 --name portainer --restart=always -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock -v portainer_data:/data portainer/portainer-ce:latest

Getting Started

Once installed, I accessed Portainer’s web interface via the designated port 9443 and completed the initial setup, including creating an admin user and defining the Docker environment to manage.

Adding App Templates To Portainer
#

Portainer comes with a select number of app templates, but sometimes you want just a little more. To add app templates here is how I do it:

  1. Navigate to the left hand side panel and click on Settings.
  2. Under the app template section paste this URL in as a replacement:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Qballjos/portainer_templates/master/Template/template.json
  1. After pasting the URL click on save application settings.

Updating Portainer
#

Keeping Portainer up-to-date is essential to benefit from the latest features and security patches. Here's how I updated Portainer:

Stop and Remove Existing Portainer Container:

docker stop portainer
docker rm portainer

Pull Latest Portainer Image:

docker pull portainer/portainer-ce:latest

Run Updated Portainer Container:

sudo docker run -d -p 8000:8000 -p 9443:9443 --name portainer --restart=always -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock -v portainer_data:/data portainer/portainer-ce:latest
